THE FOOD WEB
The food web is the collection of various food chains in an ecosystem put together in to one complex chart predators and prey. At the bottom of all food webs are the producers, who use photosynthesis to make their own energy. Above them is the primary consumers–the plant eating animals–and the secondary consumers who feed on the primary consumers. At the top of every food web are the top consumers, who are not hunted by any other animals, however like all organisms, after they die, they are feasted on by the decomposers of the ecosystem.
The Arctic ocean Food web
Like all food webs, at the bottom level of the Arctic Ocean food web is the producers. This level of the food web mainly consists of phytoplankton, one of the few forms of plant life in the Arctic Ocean biome. The phytoplankton are then fed on by herbivorous zooplankton, the primary consumers in this case, who in turn are hunted by both carnivorous zooplankton, and the Capelin Sand Eel. The top consumers in this food chain are the polar bears, who feed mostly on seals–the Capelin Sand Eel's predator. Some decomposers in the Arctic Ocean include bacteria in soil, various types of fungi and larger scavenger species. This is just one of the many chains of predators and prey shown in the food web shown.
